What is corona

Corona refers to the surface of the charged body in the gas or liquid medium of the localized discharge, often occurring around the high-voltage conductor and the tip of the charged body near the ozone, nitrogen oxide and other substances can be produced. Corona treatment

Most plastic films (such as polycarbonate films) are non-polar polymers with low surface tension, generally 29-30mN/m. Theoretically, if the surface tension of an object is lower than 33mN/m, known inks and adhesives cannot be firmly adhered to it, and therefore the surface should be treated with corona. The principle of treatment is to apply high-frequency, high-voltage electricity to the treatment equipment, so that it produces high-frequency, high-voltage discharge, resulting in tiny dense purple-blue sparks. Under the action of strong electric field, various ions produced by air ionization accelerate and impact the plastic film in the treatment device. The chemical bonds of the plastic molecules are broken and degraded, increasing the surface roughness and surface area. A large amount of ozone is generated during discharge. Ozone is a strong oxidizing agent that oxidizes plastic molecules, producing highly polar groups such as bases and peroxides that increase their surface energy.

The role of corona

Due to the various polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (opp) non-polar molecules, in PE polar ink molecules are difficult to attach to the surface of the film. Therefore ongoing PE EDM treatment (or corona treatment) is carried out before the film printing, so that the formation of polar surface layer, in order to improve the bonding fastness with polar inks.
